Japanese culture evening: calligraphy and JLPT Q&A
An evening workshop on Thursday 12 November 2026: shodo calligraphy, a JLPT N5–N3 Q&A with the tutor, and tea.
Kendahouse, 4th Floor, Nairobi
Two hours, one theme: what studying Japanese opens beyond the textbook. The evening pairs a hands-on calligraphy session with an open Q&A for anyone sitting the JLPT this December, candidates, parents, and the merely curious all welcome.
Who it is for
Current Japanese cohort learners, self-studying JLPT candidates from any school, and people who want to try the language before enrolling. No Japanese required for the calligraphy half; bring questions for the second half.
Schedule
- 17:30 · Doors and materials. Brushes, sumi ink and hanshi paper are laid out; name cards (名札) are written for everyone.
- 17:45 · Shodo basics. Holding the brush, stroke order, the eight core strokes. Then practice: two kana, one kanji, chosen for meaning rather than difficulty, participants write 放課後 (after school) and their own name.
- 18:30 · Tea break. Green tea and the wall of practice sheets; tutors circulate here, which is when the honest questions get asked.
- 18:50 · JLPT Q&A. The tutor walks through the December sitting: what N5, N4 and N3 actually demand, how the sections are timed, and how to split study across October and November. Live answers from the floor for the rest of the hour: registration deadlines, mock paper sources, whether to move up a level.
- 19:50 · Wrap-up. Sign-up sheet for the December crash sessions, brushes collected, sheets taken home.
